The more often you prune your basil, the bushier and leafier it will become. From then until the first flower buds form it will grow lush, tender foliage. Leave these to grow for a week or two, until a couple sets of leave have grown.

If the cut is performed correctly, that node will produce side shoots increasing the plant foliage over time. Basil plants turn leggy because of the use of excessive amounts of fertilizer, not enough sunlight and a lack of regular pruning. Basil is one of my favorite plants to grow:

Pruning every couple of weeks will keep the plant tidy, prevent flowering and encourage growth of new leaves. Harvest leaves a few at a time at first. Make sure that container has drainage holes too, of course!

Later, simply clip the stems at the first or second branch intersection below the tips of the branches. And basil plants flower faster under warm temperatures. Here is that same little basil plant, about a week after my initial trimming.

The important thing is to keep pruning your basil. Remember that basil plants will grow new branches in that area. As long as you prune it every once in a while, your basil plant will grow nice and big and produce plenty of leaves throughout the growing season!

There’s plenty of basil for me and my friends and neighbors! A bushy plant is better than one that grows tall. If you can’t use the basil immediately, hang stems to dry or freeze the basil in ice cube trays for later use.
