How to measure chest width on a shirt. Next, wrap the tape around the narrowest part of your waist and write down your measurement. When purchasing a shirt, there are four essential measurements you have to determine. Spread the shirt out on its back.
Measure from one side to. Measure about 8 below the armpit. 502 waist measure from side to side at the narrowest point.

When taking this measurement, pull the two ends of the yoke tight but don’t stretch it. If the shirt has rear pleats, this will be especially important. If you cannot find anyone to help you take this measurement, use the “measure shoulder width with a shirt” method, instead.

Measure for the point where the yoke meets the sleeve, straight across, to the same point on the other side. Roughly this is right under your arms. Put one end of the measuring tape at the bottom of the armpit of the shirt and measure straight across to the bottom of the other armpit.

Next, wrap a fabric tape measure around your chest, positioning it horizontally so it falls just under your armpits. Once a shirt maker has your measurements, you can order a shirt in any style or fabric, and know it will fit you perfectly. Measure straight across from the left of the shirt to the right of the shirt.
Measure the distance from one armpit to another on one side of the shirt (not all the way around). Button all the buttons on the placket. Keep the tape measure parallel to the ground.
Women who are measuring this step should also wear any regular undergarments, like a brassiere, to ensure the exact right measurements for daily wear. Do not puff out your chest or arch your back in any sort of pose that isn’t natural or sustainable. Since standard shoulder width measurements are taken along the upper portion of your back, another person will actually need to take this measurement for you.
These are the sizes of your neck, chest, waist, and sleeves: Stand straight and don’t puff out your chest. Also take a breath in so the measurement is not constricting.
Modifying the chest width by 1” adjusts the shirt circumference around your body by 2”. Button up the shirt and spread the shirt out on its front. Find the narrowest part of the shirt, which should be about halfway between the armpit and the bottom of the shirt (or around the 5th or 6th buttons).
