How To Fix Warped Wooden Cutting Board

If you do any amount of cooking, you deserve a quality board or two. Tighten the clamps until the warp in the board reverses by at least 3/4 inch.

The board soaked up a full 8 ounce bottle of mineral oil, and then about 1/3 of another bottle before i stopped. The board was almost 1/2 warped when i received it. Some cupping/bowing is just part of the territory of a wooden cutting board.

Place your warped cutting board face down (by face down, i mean so that when you’re looking at the board from the side there’s a gap between the center and the edges on the bottom side of the board) into a baking sheet or some other tray that will hold water and is large enough for the cutting board. Work in gentle, small circles until the surface is level and smooth. The most common question we receive each week at cuttingboard.com is “how do i maintain my cutting board?”, so we’ve put together this short set of instructions to help you out.

This technique is a fix for a slightly more pronounced bend, and it should take a lot less time to straighten the board out than the flipping method. Be warned that this method can potentially cause your board to crack, depending on the severity of the warp and condition of the wood, so try at your own risk ! Once the warp is gone, allow it to dry completely.

To get the best results, hold the iron for 5 to 10 seconds and then shift it to the next spot. Well, why doesn't it usually happen? Simmer the water until steam forms.

Apply it to the top, bottom, and sides of the block. You can read the details in my thread. In situations where your board is 1” or less in thickness and only slightly warped, you may attempt to fix with this method.

Because cutting boards are regularly being exposed to a lot of moisture in a way that furniture just isn't. When moistening the towels, drench them thoroughly and wring out the excess water. To fix a warped wooden board, place a damp cloth over the warped area and iron it as you would any fabric.

Try to steam the entire board to prevent swelling from taking place. It was custom made for me out of cherry with size and a built in tray to catch gravy. You don't need to drop hundreds for a john boos, there are decent boards to be had for much less from any kitchen store, bed bath & beyond, home goods, williams sonoma, etc.

It is not a table like the one in your picture, but rather a reversible bakers table top. Once the warp is gone, allow it to dry completely. Was wondering if anyone knew of any tricks to fix it and make it straight again?

Refinishing an old cutting board is simple. Place the chopping board on your kitchen worktop wet side down. Wrap your warped wood in two large moist towels and make sure the warped parts are properly covered.

Put a steel colander over the opening, then lay the bump of your warped cutting board face down on the colander and start simmering the water inside the pot to boiling. Exposing the damp side of the board to air evens out the moisture content allowing your board to flatten back out. Leave it for a few days (weeks for the worst cases) and the chances are that it will sort it self out.

Choose towels or rags that can withstand the heat of an iron. The board is roughly 30″ x 17″, and just over an inch thick. You can use plastic wrap to line both sides of the crack (just weigh it down with some butter knives or something).

To fix a warped wooden board, place a damp cloth over the warped area and iron it as you would any fabric. A certain percentage of water always remains. Was hoping there was a way by applying water or oil to either the edges or center to help it along, but don't know how.

Step 1, wrap the wood in moistened towels. The towels you use should ideally be large enough to cover the entire wood piece. If i wanted to stabilize it with a towel i would have to use two bath towels and that still wouldn't fix the problem of it not being flat.

With your cutting board lined with plastic, apply the glue directly to the crack and let it dry. You don't want to soak it in water or leave it under a running sink either. Oil your cutting board and you have a brand new cutting surface.

Hopefully, this will help the wooden fibers expand and will lead to the board flattening out once again. Apply the wood glue to fill the crack. A decent cutting board and a couple better quality knives and you can do anything!

Because this is so difficult to really mitigate perfectly, we recommend stabilizing the cutting board on a dish towel. The concave part needs to face downwards. Once it has evened out, try and turn your board over each day or week, or every time you use it.

Make sure that you cover the entire board and not just the warped areas. Wipe the concave (this is important) side of the board with a very wet sponge. The towels should.step 2, place the covered wood on an ironing board.

Maintaining a cutting board is a quick and easy task that will keep your board sanitary, looking new and extend the life of your board. Why doesn't this happen to your furniture? Once flat, place heavy objects on top of the board while drying out to ensure it stays flat.

Place a colander in the pot and the board on top of that with the warped side facing down. Now, keep your wrapped wood on a flat surface that also will be able to bear the temperature of your iron. After you have unwarped the board, remove the cover and allow the board to dry thoroughly.

The heat and moisture will help the wood fibers flatten out again. Moisten one or two large towels and wrap them around the wood, making sure that the entire warped area is covered. Hand washing the cutting board is your first line of defense against warped and cracked wood.

I used mineral oil to season the board on both sides and the edges. This will help hold the cutting board in place and reduce rocking. Your best bet is to scrub it with water and a small squirt of soap on a cleaning cloth, then wet the cloth with water and wash the board until it's no longer soapy.

Hook the bottom jaw of a clamp under the brace at each end of the sawhorses and the top jaw on each end of the board. While this method may take a few days, or weeks in the worst cases, it remains the gentlest, most permanent way to flatten a warped cutting board.
