How to clean a razor strop. Take wet rag and lightly scrub with saddle soap. The best thing to do is simply to condition your strop. Only reapply the paste occasionally, if needed.

Simply put on a small amount of paste in several locations along the strop and distribute evenly over the surface by rubbing it in with the heel of your palm or the smooth side of a glass bottle or jar, for example. The most popular are hanging strops (this is how to strop a knife with a belt), bench strops, and paddle strops. In extreme cases, your strop may have dried out.

You might notice a nice difference in the feel of the strop after doing this. I've seen little need to completely clean off a strop, i.e., stripping away all of the swarf & old compound. If not, spray it with wd40 and wipe off the crud.

If the leather has bits and pieces that can cause problems(feel sharp, tiny piece of leather comes up, etc) while stropping , use a piece of high grit sand paper to sand out the nick.

When you get toward the end, flip by rolling the razor between your thumb and forefinger, always keeping the razor on the leather, and then lower it down gently and pull it back, and then flip by rolling, keeping the spine on the leather at all times, gently down, back up. Especially handy to get into the nooks and crannies of a safety razor. Let it sit for about two minutes then remove the lather with a damp rag followed by a dry one.

Some straight razor shavers strop on the linen side first to clean the blade before moving to the leather for stropping. Then, dry off the razor and put it in a case or a box in your drawer. It’s a great method of keeping a razor clean and easy to use as it produces a very sharp final edge.

Squirt some liquid soap onto the toothbrush and scrub away. Simply rub the palm of your hand over it every other use or so. (saddle soap can be purchased in walmart by the shoe shine section).

Wipe off and let dry completely. It doesn’t have to be any special shaving soap. For normal, everyday maintenance, all that one strop maker recommends is to rub your hands up and down the strop.

Just an ordinary mild soap will do. The leather will become more pliable over time. Maintaining a straight razor strop is quite simple.

Hold the razor in your right hand in between your index finger and thumb. Another method is to clean your strop with saddle soap and a soft bristle brush or sponge. Every time you strop, you leave metal residue along with with any previously applied stropping compound.

The natural oils in your hand will keep the strop oiled and clean. This will transfer the natural oils in your hands to the strop leather. Usually used with a strop paste or a honing compound, strops allow you to polish and restore a razor’s edge.

The rust on my razor was pretty persistent, so i needed to do something a little more heavy duty. If your strop is new and you're doing this the first time, you can skip ahead to the next step. If you use the strop every day, the daily action of the razor and your oils should keep the strop hydrated.

When that happens it’s time for a cleaning. Run the razor under warm water. (this all assumes that you have a high quality leather strop to begin with.

Use the tip of your fingers specially on each border of the strop to make sure that the leather is completely flat. While blade sharpened on stone leave hone lines and remove material, strop sharpening keeps your blade whole. This step is only necessary if you have a used, loaded strop.

The glycerin in the soap will help wash off the dead skin cells and lather residue sticking on the blade. This can be done in a cup of warm, soapy water.
