When installed properly, both types of insulation fill all of the nooks and crannies in a space and make for a perfect air barrier. Simply push all of the insulation to one area and then do the ceiling of the other area, flip the insulation back over and you are done.

Shopvac has a mulcher attachment that might work but collecting the insulation then becomes the problem.

Diy attic insulation blower. You will need a friend to help with this part of the project. Blown insulation will definitely provide the highest level of benefits and save the most amount of energy with very little effort. Then feed 1/2 a bag of fill into the machine and turn on the hose to start blowing the insulation.

This process is not ‘hard’, but it is not fun either. To assemble your homemade insulation blower and get it to work, cut a whole for the end of the pipe to emerge and a second hole to link to the vacuum cleaner hose. Then just fill up the bucket, snap it shut, insert the plastic pipe of 2 to 3 inches in diameter into the hole you have created in the bucket, connect it to your vacuum cleaner hose and turn the vacuum cleaner on to the blower setting.

Spray foam offers the best attic insulation performance available. Cellulose is way cheaper in contrast to fiberglass. It helps to give the person in the attic status updates (halfway through the bags, 2/3 through, 75% through… etc).

This is the point you want to fill with spray foam or caulk. The first couple of hours were actually kind of fun, but getting a consistent two feet of insulation throughout the attic was time consuming. The blower housing is mounted on a sled which is in turn mounted on to the cart.

Try and do a clean job here, as it may mess with the overall heat insulation performance. This is the easy way to do it. It’s also worth doing the right way.

To eliminate any possible issues of starting with a heavy flywheel i changed the drive to a belt drive with a centrifugal clutch. The number one prep step: While my wife fed the bags of cellulose into the blower, i was up in the attic directing it into place.

The blower is about as loud as a vacuum and it can obscure the sound of the walkie talkie ring. The clutch is mounted on the engine drive shaft, and a belt in turn runs the blower, which has it's own shaft with a drive pulley. A bag of fiberglass insulation will cover approximately 65 square feet.

I tryed a leaf mulcher vac but the bag fills too fast and is hard to empty. Bag of all borate contractor grade 30 lb. Wrap and hold a rag around the hose where it touches the wall, and have your friend turn the blower on.

The material becomes very problematic when wet. Attic insulation removal trying to scoop this stuff up is not an option and the shopvac gets clogged after 10sec. Diy attic projects really has become quite easy and even someone with very limited home improvement skills will be able to take on such a project with a little bit of planning and calculation.

(find a diagram of common air leaks here.) Once you’ve done that, just go to the attic and remove the insulation carefully from the joists. This will help them distribute the right amount to each area of the attic, especially if you don’t use height markers.

You can receive a reduced rental rate on the blower with the purchase of the insulation. Greenfiber cellulose insulation fills gaps and voids to create an energy saving thermal blanket that can lower heating and cooling costs by 25% and reduce sound power by 60%. It’s also important to have proper ventilation alongside this insulation.

Connect the hose to the insulation machine. When air can’t move through it, you have zero heat transfer through convection. Hoses that you can connect and snake into the attic.

Gaps in the attic or between the lower floors and the attic will let heated (or cooled) air escape to the great, unconditioned outdoors, making any insulation you add essentially useless. The cellulose fits into every little nook and cranny, which is not true with the batts. At a maximum, you will be able to blow insulation into an attic within the span of one week.

Your helper will feed the blown in insulation into the hopper while you work the hose up in the attic (photo 5). First of all, you’ll need to find suitable boards that are easy to walk on. You gain many benefits from putting this material in your attic.

You need to track down your walls in the attic and dig through the existing insulation to find the exposed 2×4/drywall intersection. All you need is a leaf blower, broom, and hands. Provided that you have your materials already lined up, you should be able to blow an entire attic in one or two days.

Set the blower on a tarp on flat ground near the window or vent opening closest to the attic access. Blown insulation (both cellulose and fiberglass) comes in bags and is available at most home and hardware stores.
